While this presentation certainly exists, it tells only part of the story.

For decades, autism research focused primarily on boys. As a result, many girls with autism were overlooked, misunderstood, or misdiagnosed. Today, educators, parents, and clinicians are beginning to recognize that autism in girls often looks very different from the traditional picture many people expect.

Understanding these differences can make a tremendous impact on a child’s self-esteem, academic success, and emotional well-being.

Why Girls Are Often Missed

Many girls on the autism spectrum learn from an early age that social acceptance is important. They carefully observe the people around them and begin copying behaviors that seem socially successful.

Researchers sometimes refer to this as masking or camouflaging.

A girl may study her peers, memorize social rules, practice facial expressions, and imitate conversational patterns. To an outside observer, she may appear socially capable. Internally, however, she may be working incredibly hard to understand situations that seem to come naturally to others.

Because girls often become skilled at masking their difficulties, parents and teachers may not recognize how much effort is required for them to navigate daily life.

“She Seems Fine at School”

One common pattern reported by families is that a child appears successful during the school day but falls apart emotionally at home.

Teachers may describe the student as:

Bright

Well-behaved

Quiet

Responsible

Helpful

Yet parents may see:

Emotional meltdowns

Exhaustion

Anxiety

Irritability

Withdrawal

This does not mean the child is behaving differently on purpose. Instead, maintaining social performance throughout the day may require significant mental and emotional energy.

By the time she reaches home, her emotional reserves may be depleted.

Special Interests May Look Different

Many autistic children develop intense interests. In boys, these interests are often noticed because they may focus on subjects that appear unusual or highly specialized.

Girls may also develop intense interests, but those interests can appear more socially typical.

Examples may include:

Animals

Literature

Mythology

Art

Music

Horses

Specific television shows

Historical periods

Nature

Certain friendships

The difference is often not the topic itself but the depth of interest.

An autistic girl may devote extraordinary time, attention, and emotional investment to her chosen subjects.

The Friendship Puzzle

Many girls with autism deeply desire friendship.

Unlike stereotypes that suggest autistic individuals prefer isolation, many autistic girls long for meaningful social connection.

However, friendships can be confusing.

They may struggle with:

Reading subtle social cues

Understanding hidden social rules

Recognizing manipulation

Interpreting tone of voice

Knowing when someone is joking

Managing group dynamics

As friendships become increasingly complex during late elementary school and middle school, these challenges often become more noticeable.

Many girls begin experiencing feelings of being “different” without understanding why.

Perfectionism and Anxiety

One trait frequently observed among autistic girls is perfectionism.

These students may:

Become upset by mistakes

Fear disappointing adults

Spend excessive time on assignments

Avoid trying new things if success is uncertain

Experience significant anxiety around performance

Their frustration is often misunderstood as stubbornness or impatience.

In reality, many are working incredibly hard to meet expectations while managing uncertainty, sensory overload, or executive functioning challenges.

Executive Functioning Challenges

Executive functioning refers to the brain’s ability to organize, plan, prioritize, initiate, and complete tasks.

A bright autistic student may understand academic material perfectly yet struggle to:

Start assignments

Organize materials

Follow multiple-step directions

Manage time

Transition between activities

Complete long-term projects

Adults may mistakenly assume these difficulties reflect laziness or lack of motivation.

More often, they reflect genuine neurological differences in how the brain processes information and organizes action.

Sensory Sensitivities

Many autistic girls experience sensory differences that are not immediately visible.

Common examples include sensitivity to:

Noise

Bright lights

Clothing textures

Food textures

Strong smells

Crowded environments

Some students learn to tolerate discomfort quietly, which can make their challenges less noticeable to others.

The Emotional Cost of Being Misunderstood

Perhaps the greatest challenge many autistic girls face is not autism itself.

It is the experience of being misunderstood.

A child who repeatedly hears that she is:

Too sensitive

Too emotional

Too dramatic

Too shy

Too intense

Too perfectionistic

may begin to believe there is something wrong with her.

In reality, many autistic girls possess extraordinary strengths.

They are often:

Creative

Compassionate

Honest

Thoughtful

Observant

Passionate learners

Deep thinkers

Strong advocates for fairness and justice

When these strengths are recognized and supported, they can flourish.

What Parents and Teachers Can Do

The goal is not to make autistic girls appear more typical.

The goal is to help them understand themselves and develop the skills they need to thrive.

Helpful supports include:

Explicit teaching of social skills

Executive functioning support

Predictable routines

Sensory accommodations

Self-advocacy instruction

Growth mindset development

Opportunities to pursue interests deeply

Acceptance of neurodiversity

Most importantly, we can teach these students that being different is not the same as being deficient.

Final Thoughts

Many autistic girls spend years wondering why life feels harder than it seems to be for everyone else.

When adults understand the unique presentation of female autism, everything changes.

A child who once believed she was broken can begin to recognize that her brain simply works differently.

With understanding, support, and appropriate accommodations, autistic girls can become confident students, creative thinkers, caring friends, and remarkable adults.

The first step is seeing them clearly.

And that begins with understanding that autism does not always look the way we expect.

Thanks for reading Ms Tara at Expect Success Education! Why are they struggling in school?” A child may possess an excellent memory, ask thoughtful questions, solve complex problems, or spend hours exploring topics of interest, yet still experience academic difficulties. Intelligence and school performance are not the same thing. Academic success depends upon many skills beyond raw intelligence.

Intelligence Is Only One Piece of the Puzzle

Schools require students to organize materials, follow directions, manage time, complete assignments, read independently, write clearly, and regulate attention. A student may be highly intelligent while finding one or more of these skills challenging.

Executive Function: The Brain’s Management System

Executive functions help students plan, organize, remember instructions, start tasks, maintain focus, and complete work. Weaknesses in executive functioning can make a capable student appear inconsistent or forgetful.

ADHD Is More Than Hyperactivity

Many intelligent students with ADHD struggle to regulate attention. They may forget assignments, lose track of instructions, daydream, or show inconsistent performance despite understanding the material.

Dyslexia Does Not Reflect Intelligence

Gifted students can have dyslexia. Strong reasoning, creativity, and verbal abilities often mask reading difficulties, leading to frustration and exhaustion.

Anxiety Can Interfere With Learning

Anxiety can affect memory, concentration, classroom participation, and test performance. The challenge is emotional rather than intellectual.

Autism Spectrum Disorder

Many autistic students possess remarkable strengths but may experience challenges related to sensory processing, executive functioning, or social communication that affect school performance.

Twice-Exceptional LearnersSome students are both gifted and have a learning difference such as ADHD, dyslexia, autism, or anxiety. These students are known as twice-exceptional, or 2e learners.

Grades Do Not Define Potential

A report card measures performance within a particular system. It does not measure creativity, curiosity, resilience, compassion, imagination, or future potential.

Looking Beyond the Struggle

When a bright child struggles, a more useful question is: ‘What barriers may be preventing this student from showing what they know?’ Identifying those barriers helps educators and families provide meaningful support.

About the Author

Ms. Tara is an Education Specialist, teacher, and curriculum developer. Examples include Gifted + ADHD, Gifted + Dyslexia, Gifted + Autism, Gifted + Anxiety, or Gifted + Executive Function Challenges.

Why 2e Students Are Often Missed

Giftedness can hide a disability, and a disability can hide giftedness. Teachers may see only strengths or only weaknesses, missing the complete picture.

Common Signs Parents Notice

Advanced vocabulary, deep curiosity, unusual creativity, intense interests, inconsistent performance, frustration with school, perfectionism, strong verbal abilities, and uneven academic skills are common indicators.

Gifted and ADHD

These learners may generate wonderful ideas but struggle with organization, task completion, attention regulation, and follow-through.

Gifted and Dyslexic

Strong reasoning and memory may compensate for reading difficulties, causing dyslexia to remain undetected for years.

Gifted and Autistic

Autistic gifted students often demonstrate remarkable knowledge, memory, pattern recognition, or specialized interests while facing challenges related to flexibility, communication, or sensory processing.

Supporting the Whole Child

Effective support focuses on both strengths and challenges. Accommodations, enrichment opportunities, executive-function supports, assistive technology, and individualized instruction can help students thrive.

A Strength-Based Approach

The goal is not to ‘fix’ the learner but to understand how the student learns best. Pelton

Disclaimer: This document is educational in nature and is not intended to diagnose any medical, psychological, visual, or learning disability. Families should consult qualified professionals when concerns arise.

Overview

Some highly gifted students with Autism Spectrum Disorder demonstrate extraordinary verbal reasoning, memory, creativity, and conceptual understanding while simultaneously struggling to sustain reading. When a student repeatedly becomes sleepy, fatigued, or disengaged after only a short amount of reading, the behavior may reflect a genuine processing challenge rather than a lack of effort.

Reading Comprehension and Autism

Research has shown that many autistic students possess strong decoding skills yet experience challenges with inference, perspective taking, integrating information across a text, and extracting implied meaning. Reading can therefore require substantially more cognitive effort than verbal conversation.

Twice-Exceptional Learners and Hidden Dyslexia

Gifted students may compensate for dyslexia through memory, intelligence, reasoning, and auditory learning. Their strengths can mask reading weaknesses for years. These students often understand audiobooks exceptionally well while finding independent reading exhausting.

Working Memory and Cognitive Load

Reading requires the reader to hold information in mind while simultaneously processing new information. Difficulties with working memory can increase mental effort and lead to fatigue, reduced stamina, and avoidance.

Hyperlexia

Some autistic students display advanced word recognition and vocabulary yet struggle to derive meaning from text. This profile, known as hyperlexia, can create the appearance of strong reading ability while comprehension remains difficult.

Visual Processing Considerations

Some students experience visual tracking or convergence difficulties not detected during standard

vision screenings. Reading may become physically tiring and result in headaches, eye strain, lossof place, or drowsiness.

Emotional Factors

Repeated experiences of frustration can create anxiety around reading tasks. In some students, the nervous system begins to associate reading with stress, resulting in fatigue or disengagement.

Medical Considerations

Persistent fatigue should also be discussed with healthcare providers. Sleep disorders, medication effects, anemia, thyroid disorders, and other medical conditions may contribute to excessive

tiredness.

Recommendations for Parents

Here at Expect Success Education we address this problem in a 3 prong attack: Develop vocabulary, read aloud and utilize video and illustrated content particularly for literature where, for example, archaic language is used. We help because we know our students want to learn.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" START:. Student gets 2 minute lecture from me on whatever is the topic of the day such as why it is so important to look up the meaning of words. Determine issues he’s facing in class, teach how to write a follow up letter to specific subject teacher in high school, ensure letter is written and sent, locate app that enables student to rapidly complete the homework required, update and make sure student is prepared to use the correct tools to complete the assignment. 15 minutes have passed. The remainder of the lesson is divided into 2 parts: 1. With AI — listing every single skill a 10th grade math student must master in simple terms, 2. finding the words in the first line of the first sentence on this document is not understood by the student. Observe student is yawning seems bored and looks aggravated. Realize this is 100% due to not knowing what the words mean in any of his math classes since those two first words were “Algebra” and “Expression”. Realize the kid is a genius and nothing — not all the things he was told was wrong with his mind — are true. Tell him he’s doing great and push him to look up the word’s meanings. Explain why Mathematics is a language. Make sure that concept is fully understood with examples—recording at a ("9”) on our scale of understanding. In fact, throughout entire lesson, on a scale of 1-10 and never got below an 8, according to this student. Try to tell me how to do all this in 30 minutes without AI. Try to tell me there is something disabled about a child when their mind works differently. You can’t. If you want to teach the new generation or you know a student who needs assistance that is effective, particularly those presenting with challenges, get in touch at www.expectsuccesseducation.com. p.s. I also wrote a worksheet for following up at the next lesson, and it is available for free to parents and students purchasing any item at my school.

With Love, Teacher Tara

<picture></picture>

Thanks for reading Ms Tara at Expect Success Education! She had to find relief from his crushing pressure. She could feel his mind imposing on her, wanting to speak to her, wanting to guide her—to be his. She scrambled for thoughts that were entirely hers: her own memories, her loves, all that she wished for and enjoyed.

She gathered her thoughts close: pictures of her childhood, the Elven—her cousins and friends. She thought of the beauty of the earth, sea and sky, of Bran and his enchantment, of the forest deer, small animals and birds, of her mother’s patience and learning magic. Her mother—a mortal woman so full of admiration that she herself was magic.

Then she realized. There is nothing Donn can do. His wickedness is entirely that which was given by the souls to him. Perhaps it had been given in earnest and he had used it in his cruelly, but they had given him their power and now, it was his.

But now, they will take it back, she determined. He was a just a fake. He was an illusion. He was a falsehood born of lies. Just as he had consumed the power of the lost souls, she would restore it—she would find a way.

Suddenly, she blurt out, “I wish freedom for the lost souls! They should learn how and what you really are and escape from your trap forever. I wish you knew that you have succumbed — you have given in to hate and lies. You have selfishly ruled their lives with cruelty, behind their back, pretending, pretending. Just for your show! These are immortals and you have entrapped them with your lies. I wish …I wish….”

What does Aine do to overcome evil?

                                                      Find out what happens next!

The 20th Anniversary Commemorative Edition of Elven World—Return of the Tuatha de Danann is being released Spring 2026, just in time for your summer enjoyment. You know after you write and publish something it is out in the world, and frankly I did not really think of comparing the details of the Evil One in this story to tyrants that we might ever see in real life right before our eyes. Here is an excerpt from the book, when Aine the goddess or radiant being of Love, meets Donn the Lord of the Lost Souls:

Elven World Return of the Tuatha de Danann

Chapter 19 Lord of the Lost Souls—Betrayal

“What is this place?” Áine asked, feeling perhaps, at last, in this great lion, she’d met someone she could trust.

“This is where dreams come true.”

	“So this is someone’s dream?”

“Yes, or perhaps the dream of many.” The lion waved his arm indicating all of present. “Everyone should be free to do as they like, especially children, don’t you agree?”

They strolled for what seemed like hours. The children and young people were laughing and playing. Yet something odd seemed to shadow the place. No one said hello or smiled at them. They seemed to be enjoying themselves, yet no one was friendly or spoke with them. And Áine could not seem to shake her strange perception of the place, as if she were looking at the world tipped slightly sideways or through a kaleidoscope.

“Is this all these children do?” she asked. “Don’t they have families? Where do they live?”

“They live nearby,” The lion answered. “They are happy, you see? They want for nothing. This is the life they’ve chosen. Complete freedom to do whatever they wish.”

“What’s that?” Áine pointed at the dark silhouette of a hill that seemed to be full of people sleeping. She drew closer. “What is that?” She repeated. She wrested herself from the lion’s arm and ran toward the men and women lying there. “Hello! Hello! What do you think of this place? Would you like to come with us?”

There was no movement and as she drew closer, she saw the people were completely still. She looked at the wide hill, covered with people lying motionless. Not one of them was breathing. Then she looked beyond the hill to find a land bereft of life. Smoke filled the air; trees buckled in the wind and fell to the land thick with soot; a lonely starving dog ran in fear and the only sound was the cry of a vulture, dropping down to peck at death and the tired earth. People hurried across concrete streets filled with trash, rushing to tall grey buildings through the polluted atmosphere, their heads hung low, pressing against the wind. She squinted to see the buildings had no windows or doors. It was the very opposite of the place they had been, where he showered her with adoration.

No, there was no living thing. There were no harmonious songs of birds, no buds on trees, only that which had been used; discarded and forgotten. A feeling came upon her; a feeling, like a song that was played out of tune—like an animal crying in pain—everywhere, every sound that should have been there was gone and in its place, a whine that pinched her nerves and made her very, very frightened.

The sickening feeling swelled in her gut, but she took courage and it turned to flaming anger. She turned to the lion. “They’re dead or destroyed! This world has been spent and wasted. Who are these people? Why is their world black while the others have everything?”

“Ah, no worries,” said Donn. “This is not where you will stay. You will stay elsewhere. These people are…they are…eternally out of the way, so to speak. Out of sight, out of mind. You see, there is a limited amount, not enough for everyone, too bad for some. Sometimes people get in the way of enjoyment, I am sure you understand. There is just no time in our busy lives to worry about such things.

“So, I’ve simply taken care of things so there are no problems. The problems are far away; you don’t even have to see them. You, on the other hand, Áine, you can live in an ideal world.”

Áine could not speak and tears filled her eyes.

He continued. “Everyone has the same chance, and those who get in the way, well, they need to be taken out of the way. Everybody knows that. Those you see alive are the fittest, the cleverest and of course, the most willing to be cruel when it’s needed, but that’s needed to enjoy life just as you like.

“Everyone knows fair and equal treatment is the law. Equal treatment does not mean honest treatment. There’s no law that requires them to know their fate when they come here.” The lion looked up and smiled patronizingly, as if there were no need for her to really understand the details.

Áine could see his eyes, the same eyes as Donn, sunken and dark. “You … how dare you use the cloak of the great lion to pretend and create this false heaven? You sacrifice all that is most precious—life—not just of people and animals but the land itself. It is you who have taught them to hate and kill! It is you who have taught them to quietly drown out the noise of the dying and ignore the foul air and water, discarding what you no longer want.”

“No, Young One, they had to survive; they chose this way: to have all they want and ignore the cries of those less fortunate. Besides, they probably deserved it; no one is free from sin. These people have probably done something to deserve their misfortune, right?

“Those you see here in this colorful world, overcome adversity by removing the barriers, nullifying them. The fittest deserve the best, that’s the law of nature. And so do you. You deserve the best. Their sacrifice is very little and you don’t need to worry about it. Let’s go back to where you belong….”

“No! No! No!” she screamed, indignant at the injustice of it all. “You are using them to create a pretend world—a fake world where some are better than others, where survival means cruelty. This is not true! You are teaching them greed and hatred.”

She turned and ran from him but the sickening feeling had overtaken her. She ran faster and faster, frantically trying to free herself from the feeling of the terrible place, tripping over people who seemed to grasp at her as she ran back toward the doorway and her father.

At last, she fell into Lugh’s arms, burying her face in his chest, crying like a child. “He has taken souls of those who were lost. He has created a pretend world by sacrificing men and women, land and sky! I hate him, Father, he is evil. He is trapping them! He has twisted the laws to his own ways. He is teaching children to do harm, he is showing them how to be cruel!”

Donn appeared in the doorway, as he was before, very tall and bony in his white robes. “No, Young One, you still have it wrong. I give people exactly what they want,” he said smoothly. “I am not the one to choose. They are. Come. There is more.”

“I don’t want to see your world! This is not the world they would create if they were free. It is not!”

“No?” Though he did not touch her, Áine could feel his forceful grip on her once again. “I must disagree, Child. People are not as innocent as you believe. You will see. There is more. Come with me.”

Well, since you have to read the book to see what happens next, I want to tell you the 20th Anniversary Edition is coming out this summer and you’ll want your own copy of ElvenWorld The Return of the Tuatha de Danann. Along with the gorgeous novel, there is a beautiful new mythology complimentary book which is free with your purchase from me directly for electronic copies and Amazon purchases too. I am working on some punctuation for my latest novel called Star Travelers Through the Portal. It is written with some beautiful poetic prose and straight up poetry as well as song lyrics.

In this course of this lovely experience, I have made some discoveries about punctuation which I want to record here for posterity, as to what punctuation actually IS and also, what it is NOT.

Let’s start with what it is NOT. It is not a bunch of rules for measuring your correctness and punishing you for errors.

It IS a written, symbolic sub-language that helps the reader hear, feel and time the language it is were inputting letter by letter on typographical machines. But before all that - it was simply used to mark breath, pause, to give rhythm, cadence and generally guide oral reading.

As an actress I performed poetry reading extensively back in the day. I would naturally mark up my page during practice to indicate inflection, cadence, voice, and rhythm such as pause. This allowed me to read aloud. Many poets are limited by punctuation and so are writers.

The best way for me to show you the real joy of punctuaton is for you to read Star Travelers, Through the Portal. There’s about 170 pages you can see the way punctuation can be used. I may say so myself a very very enjoyable way to teach grammar.

AI Detailed Response

My AI Assistant describes Grammar as a set of symbols that guide breath, attention and emotional timing. Periods close feeling or idea. Line breaks add time or explanation. Here is what they said to explain the Expect Success Education teaching method:

At Expect Success Education, we teach grammar as a living system — not merely a set of rules, but a tool for clarity, expression, and understanding.

In this work, punctuation is treated as a reading instrument.
It consists of symbols that help the reader hear, feel, and time language as it is meant to be read.

A sentence does not need to be complete in a technical sense to be complete in meaning. In poetry and literary writing, fragments may stand on their own when they carry a full moment of thought, sensation, or awareness. A period may close a feeling. A line break may replace explanation. Meaning is not only understood — it is felt.

At Expect Success Education students are taught that:

In academic writing, punctuation follows standardized conventions.

In poetry and creative literacy, punctuation follows voice, rhythm, breath, and intention.

This approach supports deep reading comprehension, confident writing, and expressive fluency. It encourages students to read aloud with presence, to listen for meaning beneath the words, and to understand that language is not only informational — it is relational.

This philosophy reflects our broader commitment to holistic education, literacy development, and teaching children and young adults how to think, feel, and communicate with clarity and humanity.

Expect Success Education
Founder & Educator: Teacher Tara

Always remember that AI is guided by your questions. a highly effective form of teaching according to educational statistics (see web-notes attached below). It is a teaching method where students learn by actively investigating and responding to a complex, real-world problem or challenge over an extended period, rather than through traditional passive instruction of listening to a teacher, reading or even watching someone else do it.

If you have the chance, insist on Project Based Learning in every classroom. All students love it. But some students like Kinesthetic (movement oriented) Learners, get almost no where without it. It outperforms traditional classrooms, improves student achievement on standardized tests, and enhances critical thinking, problem-solving, and social-emotional skills across various subjects and demographics.

Project Based Learning is highly effective for improving engagement and readiness for college and careers, especially with well-designed curricula and implementation such as we provide with Expect Success Education Lesson Manuals.

Check out our intro video and join us by becoming a subscriber.
